Big Book of Science Things to Make and Do

Big Book of Science Things to Make and DoThough Usborne lists this as being for ages 4 and up, we tried our first experiment when my daughter wasn’t quite two years old. We made the bubbling witch’s brew, and her and her friend of around the same age had a blast scooping baking soda into jars and watching it foam and bubble up. And I have to be honest, I thought it was pretty cool too. I’d done similar experiments in school, but it had never occurred to me to add dish soap or food colouring to the vinegar first.

This book is chock-full of ideas like that. Simple, easy-to-do activities mostly using items that may already be on hand or that are easy to find. But they are a lot of fun and can lead to discussions about interesting science topics. My daughter is three now and we’ve tried many of the activities in the book. On rainy days we will pull it out and see if there’s something new to try out, or repeat one we’ve already done.
